I have a 2007 Ford Fusion. I regularly take it to the dealer for maintenance. The 30,000 mile service was done last March. At that time the service tech noted that the battery terminals were getting corroded and cleaned them up for $50.
Since then I've had it in for service a couple more times. The other day, at 38,000 miles, the car wouldn't start. It was running fine before that. It turns out the problem was battery corrosion. It also corroded a cable. With the diagnostics, new battery and new cable it cost me $600.
I'm not complaining about the cost. I'm sure if I had car guy connections, it would be cheaper. And I could periodically look under the hood myself. But it seems suspicious to me that no one noticed any problems with corrosion when it was last in the shop 2 months ago. Or possibly I had a bum battery.
What do you think?

$600 is absolutely outrageous!!! 
You probably didn't need new cables but just a good cleaning
(or new cable clamps) and you can get a high CCA battery
anywhere for around $60.
I'd better keep my mouth shut from further comments as this
is the reason I quit working for Firestone due to massive
overselling and general screwing of customers.
Best thing to do is have these folks to give you a written

Rock is right Barbi. That was way too high. I am disappointed that a dealer would do that to you.

Thanks for your replies.
I've no doubt that the repairs should've cost less. But really what I was asking about was not the cost but about the problem with the battery itself.
The first time the issue with corrosion around the battery terminals was brought to my attention was last March. I had everything cleaned-up then. Since then, I've had my car in for service 3 times and once more for other work and there was no mention of corrosion then. The last time was 2 months ago.
Does that seem likely?
What I'm worried about is that I paid for towing, diagnostics, new battery, new cable for something that they should've noticed and warned me about in any of my past four visits. Obviously the issue did not go away last March.

If you're using the same repair place, I'd have thought they'd be "on notice" about the earlier problem from their service record and recheck it for you without prompting. On the other hand you probably couldn't expect a new service location to recheck someone else's work unless it was either brought to their attention or extremely obvious. In any event it is probably a good idea to remind them.
In my experience battery corrosion tends to get worse unless it is completely eliminated. Hopefully, you have it all taken care of now.
